We’re not going to sit here and tell you the importance of SEO, many people already understand the overlying concepts of ranking on the search engine result pages. Having a website and social media accounts set up is a great first step, but it takes more. Just building backlinks and content to your site won’t get you in the first position. It takes much more, and these steps will help you get started.
Optimize the Website
When a client first begins working with Adficient the first thing we do is run a complete site audit. This includes a ton of different factors, some of the most common you may recognize are proper title tags, meta descriptions, h2 tags, etc. There are a few tools out there that will run site audits for you (at a fee for a full search audit), or an agency such as Adficient can complete this audit.
If you decide to do this yourself you’ll find a list of site fixes that should be taken care of before any SEO campaign. As we always say “If you want to rank on Google, you need to show Google you can build a proper site”. Google gives a set of guidelines they suggest a site should follow to be able to rank properly.
Also, simply having Google Search Console installed can give site owners a good idea of some major issues with their site. Some of the biggest ones being no sitemap, 404 pages, and any missing tags. As you build out your SEO campaign you should always be referencing Search Console.
Get Your Site Listed
The first place you should be getting your site listed is Google My Business. If you own a brick and mortar store where users will be looking for a physical address, or directions, you need to be listed. It’s a simple task to complete, submit your information, then wait for verification.
Once Google My Business is submitted it’s time to look into additional business directory type sites. Here are 25 sites to help promote you business, these sites are relevant to businesses, high quality, and authoritative. These three points are important when adding your site to a directory or listing. Relevancy, if you have a boxing gym you don’t want to be listed on home repair sites.
Get Friends, Colleagues, & Businesses Linking to You
As mentioned above it’s very important to build backlinks to your site. However, this can be a difficult task, specifically for sites in very competitive industries. The best way to get started building backlinks is by asking your friends, colleagues, and other businesses you associate with. As always, relevancy is very important, you only want to be linking to sites that are related to yours. If it doesn’t make sense, just ignore it. This will be helpful for your campaign down the road.
One of the best places to start is with businesses you work with. If you’re boxing gym maybe you know other businesses that offer Krav Maga, boxing equipment or spin classes. Talk with them on how each of you can help each other by linking to each other’s sites. Remember to fit the link into the site organically, in other words don’t force it in. Add links in through content where it flows.
Write an Awesome Blog Article
Again, many businesses owners have heard they need a blog, but keeping a blog updated can be time consuming. You don’t need to be writing blog posts everyday, or every week. A high quality, relevant article that is helpful and entertaining to users can be done once a month or so. Noticed how we mentioned writing something that is helpful and entertaining. This is the type of content users are likely to share and link to.
Many people think they need to just write content to write content. The more words I have the better I’ll look to Google. This is false, the content needs to be helpful to users. Google knows what content is being viewed by users and how they interact with it. Now if you own a boxing gym what are some questions new members ask? Address these questions within a blog post, chances are people are searching these questions before they call.
Now the chances of a site ranking on page one with these simple steps is minimal. However, it’s a step in the right direction. By continuing these processes, being consistent, and following guidelines you’ll see the site gain traction.
